Despite the gloom of the day and some unfortunate camera work (and the wrong date printed onto the video!) this record of the end of the Northallerton to Redmire branch railway line was, happily, in vane, as the line later re-opened as The Wensleydale Railway - a heritage line. But on a foggy day in January 1993, no one knew this as a train of inter-city liveried Mk1 coaches topped by a pair of Class 37 locomotives, and tailed by a Class 47, took passengers along the line for the 'final' time. At the end, I left the camera running at Leyburn Station to capture the sad atmosphere as the line was now 'extinct' (as they said in the Titfield Thunderbolt). But just google this line today and find a story just as (if not more) successful than anything portrayed in a film. It may not be my best film, but it was meant to be a record of my witnessing the very end of an important piece of Yorkshire Dales railway history. It was filmed on VHS-C analogue format.
