태국의 방콕, 치앙마이에서 한달살기를 계획하는 사람이 많다. 나는 치앙마이에서 한달살기를 몇번 했는데 디지털노마드가 지내기에 장점이 많은 곳이었다.
물론 단점도 있겠지만, 장점이 단점을 압도하기 때문에 전세계의 디지털노마드가 모여들 것이다. 디지털노마드가 많이 사용하는 노마드리스트(nomadlist.com)에는 치앙마이가 지내기 좋은 도시 1등을 할 때가 많다.
치앙마이는 태국 북부의 산악지대에 위치해 열대 기후가 아니라서 날씨도 선선하고, 카페나 맛집, 인터넷이 잘 되는 공유오피스가 많아 디지털노마드로 일하며 머물기 좋은 곳이다. 치앙마이는 스쿠터를 렌트하기 편리하다. 오토바이로 10분 거리 안에 생활 편의시설이 모여 있고, 숙소(콘도, 호텔), 마켓, 종합병원도 잘 갖춰졌다. 또한 물가도 싼데도 서비스업 수준은 높았다. 커피 산지가 가까워 원두가 좋고, 예쁜 카페도 많다.
영어 원어민들이 많이 체류하고 있어서, 영어가 체육관도 있고 영어로 진행되는 요가, 쿠킹클래스가 많다. 치앙마이 대학교 인근의 치앙마이 야시장이나 올드시티 외곽의 선데이마켓(치앙마이 주말 야시장)에서 받을 수 있는 마사지도 빼놓을 수 없는 장점이다.

오늘은 치앙마이에서 지내며 태국인들을 접하면서 느낀 태국 사람들이 불만 없이 보이는 이유에 대해 얘기해 보고자 한다.

한국은 때로는 ‘시위 천국'이라고 표현될 정도로 집회의 자유가 있다. 다니엘 튜더의 ‘기적을 이룬 나라 기쁨을 잃은 나라’에도 한국의 시위문화가 잘 소개되어있다. 반면 태국에선 사회에 대한 불만이 시위로 표출되는 경우는 드물다. 그래서 북한의 김정일도 시장을 개방하는 중국 모델보다 시장경제와 안정된 왕권을 동시에 유지하는 태국 모델에 관심이 컸다.

태국 사회엔 사회 압력을 줄이는 압력밥솥의 감압 밸브 같은 것들이 많다. 태국 사회는 연세대학교 국문학과 마광수 교수가 말한 상수도와 하수도가 균형을 이루는 사회의 모습에 가까운 것 같다. 수많은 불교 사찰과 공양하는 모습 같은 종교적 상징들을 어디서나 볼 수 있다. 한편 방콕의 카오산 로드 같은 곳은 화려한 밤문화와 나이트 클럽으로도 잘 알려져 있다. 최근엔 마리화나가 합법화 되기도 했다. 또한 음식, 축제, 무에타이 같은 것들도 태국의 대표적인 이미지다. 태국은 술로도 유명한데 싱하 같은 맥주나, 쌩쏨 같은 위스키(럼주)가 대표적이다. 태국 여행의 필수 코스인 마사지도 관광객들만 받는 게 아니다. 치앙마이 주말 야시장 인근엔 현지인들이 찾는 노상 마사지샵이 많다.

쉬는 날도 많다. 지역별 휴일도 있고, 한국과는 분위기도 다르다. 태국 북부의 전통 명절 이펭, 러이끄라통, 송크란(송끄란)은 휴일 이상의 축제이다.

태국의 역사와 전통도 자부심을 가질 만하다. 태국은 빈부격차가 심하다, 지니계수가 높다고들 하지만 주변국 보다 GDP가 월등히 높다. 특히 미얀마, 캄보디아, 라오스와 비교하면 그렇다. 태국엔 미얀마에서 밀입국해 온 노동자들이 많은데, 아유타야 왕조 시절 태국은 한 때 미얀마(버마)의 속국이었다. 치앙마이는 태국 북부여행의 중심지여서 트레킹 코스를 찾아 여행 온 이들도 많다. 또한 은퇴 비자를 받아 은퇴 이민을 온 호주, 미국인이 많아서 영어로 수업이 진행되는 국제학교도 있고 부동산 계약이나 스쿠터 렌트 등이 영어 계약서로 이뤄지는 경우가 많다. 이런 점들이 치앙마이가 살기 좋은 곳이라는 걸 말해준다.

I’ve stayed in Chiang Mai, Thailand as a digital nomad for a few times. Chiang Mai is considered one of the best cities for digital nomads to stay and it’s often ranked No 1 on nomadlist.com, a website that ranks best places for digital nomads.

Chiang Mai has a rainy season from May to Oct. and the burning season from Jan to Mar. Chiang Mai is located in a mountainous region, so it has a quite different climate from the south. The weather is cooler. There are many cafes, such as Akha ama cafe, Fern forest cafe, Ristr8to, and coworking spaces with good internet access. So it was a good place to stay as a digital nomad looking for a place for remote work. And within 10 minutes on a scooter, you can reach big, modern hospitals and shopping malls. There are also many condos and homestays available for long-term stays. Chiang Mai is friendly to foreigners. Many locals speak fluent English, and English is spoken in gyms and yoga, or cooking classes.

Today, I would like to talk about why Thais seem uncomplaining, and my impression on Thai society.

Spiritual and hedonic cultures coexist in Thailand. Numerous Buddhist temples and statues of Buddha are seen everywhere. On the other hand, there are areas famous for nightlife, such as Pattaya or Khaosan Road. There are surprisingly good alcoholic drinks, for example beer like Singha, Chang, and Leo, and whiskey like Ssangsom are representative. Massage is not just for tourists, but for everyone. At Chiang Mai Weekend Night Market, there are many street massage shops that locals visit.

There are many holidays. In addition to national holidays, there are also regional holidays, and the atmosphere is different from Korea. Yi Peng, Loy Krathong, and Songkran are more than just some holidays. They are festivals.

Thailand's history and traditions are also something to be proud of. Especially compared to neighboring countries, Myanmar, Cambodia, and Laos. There are many workers who have been smuggled into Thailand from Myanmar. By the way, during the Ayutthaya Dynasty, Thailand was once a vassal state of Myanmar(Burma). Thailand also attracts many tourists and foreigners. Chiang Mai is the center of Northern Thailand tourism and many tourists come to Chiang Mai for trekking trips. In Chiang Mai, it is easy to see foreigners who are on a retirement visa(non o visa) for long-term stay or retired immigration.
For this reason, real estate contracts or scooter lease contracts are written in English in many cases. And there are so many international schools offering classes in English for foreign students.
