Eight days after the legal deadline, South Korea's National Assembly late Tuesday finally passed next year's budget bill, worth 429-point-nine billion U.S. dollars.
Initially, the government proposed a budget worth 431 billion dollars, but the ruling Democratic Party together with 4 minor opposition parties excluding the main opposition Liberty Korea Party formed the "4+1 consultative body" and submitted their own budget bill to be passed before the last day of the regular session.
The budget for 2020 is an increase of nine-point-one percent from this year.
The bill passed with 156 votes, but is receiving a strong backlash from the main opposition for ignoring their consent.
The ruling party and National Assembly speaker Moon Hee-sang put the proposal up for a vote after lengthy negotiations with the main opposition ended without compromise.
The same day, the assembly also passed 16 non-contentious bills including safety bills such as the so-called Min-sik bill, a revised Road Traffic Act which seeks to ensure children's safety in school zones, as well as the revised Parking Lot Act or the Ha-jun bill, which seeks to install anti-skid facilities to strengthen safety in parking lots.
