Deep Purple is an English rock band formed in Hertfordshire in 1968 (originally known as Roundabout) with Ritchie Blackmore, Jon Lord, Nick Simper, Ian Paice and Rod Evans. Along with Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath, he is considered a pioneer of hard rock and heavy metal, although some of the band members believe that their music cannot be strictly pigeonholed into a specific genre. The band often incorporated elements of classical music, blues rock, pop and progressive rock into their work. Deep Purple has been listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the "World's Loudest Band". To date, the band's music releases have sold 100 million records worldwide. Considered one of the first and most influential hard rock bands.

During its activity, the band underwent many personnel changes, and in the years 1976–1984 it was disbanded. The band's most successful line-up, called Mark II, consisted of Ian Gillan, Ritchie Blackmore, Roger Glover, Jon Lord, and Ian Paice. This line was active from 1969 to 1973, then from 1984 to 1989, and again in 1993, when further cooperation between Blackmore and the rest of the band seemed impossible. He was replaced by Steve Morse. Currently, Deep Purple's roster is stable. The only changes were in the position of keyboardist, when in 2002 Jon Lord, who decided to devote himself to classical music, was replaced by Don Airey. The only member of the band who has performed in it continuously since its foundation is drummer Ian Paice.
