🐟 From Fishing Village to Tourist Hub

Torremolinos began as a humble fishing village, but the tourism boom of the 1960s completely transformed it. The town rapidly grew into a densely populated destination dedicated to sun and sand tourism, with wide beaches, countless hotels, and an array of leisure facilities.

🏛️ Iconic Landmarks and Origins

The town’s name comes from its history: a watchtower (torre) combined with several mills (molinos) once used to grind wheat. These were strategically placed perpendicular to the sea to harness the water’s hydraulic power.

Today, the Pimentel Tower stands as Torremolinos’ most iconic monument, while neighborhoods like Bajondillo and La Carihuela still preserve traces of the old fishing traditions.

🏰 Fortresses and Castles

Over time, the coastline was fortified with defensive structures. One of the most significant was St. Clare’s Castle, built in the second half of the 18th century on the site of an earlier fort. Although the castle no longer exists—replaced by a modern hotel complex—it remains an important part of the town’s history.

📜 Shifts in Identity
• 1813 → Torremolinos became an independent municipality.
• 1924 → It was absorbed back into the city of Málaga.
• 1960s → The arrival of mass tourism reshaped the local economy and lifestyle, turning Torremolinos into one of the world’s best-known holiday resorts.
• 1988 → Responding to local wishes, the Andalusian Regional Government restored Torremolinos’ independence as a municipality.

With its Congress Center hosting international conventions and its reputation as a vibrant seaside escape, Torremolinos is far more than just a beach town—it’s a place where tradition, history, and modern tourism meet.
