The Jazz Epistles - Scullery Department

Описание к видео The Jazz Epistles - Scullery Department

One of South Africa's most important jazz bands the Jazz Epistles included such luminaries as Kieppe Moeketsi on alto, Hugh Masekela on trumpet, Jonas Gwangwa on trombone, Johnny Gertze on bass, Makaya Ntshoko on drums and Dolalr Brand (Abdullah Ibrahim) on piano - what a line up!
This is from their one and only LP (although some of them recorded two LPs with American pianist John Mehegan just prior to this).
Jazz Epistles Vol. 1 is commonly said to be the first jazz album produced by an all black band in South Africa - and it a croker!
This track, composed by Moeketsi refers to the way in which black South Africans were forced to live under the apharteid regime. Black South Africans could not enter places via the front door and were forced to enter through kitchens or the scullery. That was also where you would find out what was really happening in a place!
I was amazingly lucky to find a copy recently - one of my all time holiest of holy grails. I never through I'd see an original copy. A piece of jazz history
