This year marks Memorial Hall’s centenary, as it continues to stand both as a place of remembrance and a home to a wide range of activities, including school assemblies and artistic performances on the campus of Marlborough College in the UK.

Built in 1925, the iconic building honours nearly 1,000 fallen soldiers who lost their lives in the World Wars. Their engraved names live on in the vestibules and on the curved wall of the Hall’s auditorium, which over the years, has become a stage for generations of Malburians. In 2018, the space called for major restoration across its architectural, structural, mechanical, and electrical systems.

Reimagined as a world-class performing arts venue while preserving its classical character, the 600-seat semi-circular amphitheatre is now used to great effect for both music and drama, with improved acoustics, sight lines, an extended stage with a wider proscenium opening, enhanced back-of-house facilities, and greater audience comfort.

A key feature of the redesign is a customized system of variable and fixed acoustic reflectors suspended above the stage. These disperse sound beautifully throughout the space, overcoming acoustical challenges caused by the geometric configuration – ensuring every performance resonates.
