In celebration of the hundredth anniversary of Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi's death on January 27th, Italian film director, FRANCO ZEFFIRELLI will stage Aida - one of the composer's most famous works - in a 350-seat theatre in Busseto, Verdi's birthplace in Northern Italy.
'Aida' is one of Verdi's most opulent operas, normally requiring a huge stage, hundreds of actors and sometimes even live horses and elephants but the director, who has worked in cinema, theatre and opera, has decided to stage it on a much smaller scale this time.
The opera launches a busy year for the director who in February 2001 starts shooting a movie on the life of Maria Callas, the Greek soprano, with whom he worked with in the fifties. They staged Verdi's Traviata in Dallas in 1958.
Greek soprano Teresa Stratas is slated to play the opera diva. The director is also planning a film about the great aristocratic families of Florence.
Zeffirelli's films include Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet with Mel Gibson, Brother Sun, Sister Moon, the TV series Jesus of Nazarus, Tea With Mussolini and The Champ. During the eighties he filmed a series of operas including La Traviata (1982), Otello (1986), Cavalleria rusticana (1982) and Pagliacci (1982).
He has also directed productions of Falstaff, Don Carlo,Turandot, Tosca, La Boh�me and Carmen for television.
Zeffirelli attended the University of Florence where he studied architecture, but he quickly became involved with the university's theatre company. His studies were interrupted by Germany's occupation of Italy; he became a partisan and served as an interpreter for the Scots Guard. When the war was over, he went to Rome to pursue a career in theatre.
In 1946 he joined Luchino Visconti's Morelli-Stoppa Company as an actor and stage director. After working with Visconti on La terra trema (1948; The Earth Trembles) and other films, Zeffirelli began to concentrate on stage design. His first major design for opera was a production (1952-53) of Gioacchino Rossini's L'Italiana in Algeri for La Scala, Milan. He worked on a number of other opera and theatre productions from the 1950s, notably the operas La traviata (1958), Lucia di Lammermoor (1959), and La Boh�me (1963 and 1981).
One of his first films was The Taming of the Shrew (1967) with Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor.
