This video shows our hike at the North Slope White Bluffs trail, it was incredible! After hiking 1.5 miles we reached the first dune, the next 1.5 miles were mainly in sand, we did 6 miles total for the roundtrip. The views to the south were incredible with the Columbia River and Hanford Site in front of us. I initially thought that the large structures in the distance were part of the radioactive cleanup but later found out that they are actually entombed nuclear reactors. The Hanford Site processed plutonium for the majority of the USA's nuclear weapons. They had 9 reactors from the mid 1940's to the mid 1980's. Cleanup started in the early 1990's and will take another 30-50 years. This place was heavily contaminated with radiation and other heavy metals, at one time cooling water was pumped right back into the river and other liquid waste was just dumped onto the ground. I hope they are successful of finally cleaning up this Superfund site someday.
