Описание к видео What Makes Politicians So Untrustworthy? Nixon Explains

American politics is often thought of as a sleazy profession for several overlapping reasons, rooted in both history and perception.

First, money plays a huge role. Running for office in the United States is expensive, and candidates rely heavily on wealthy donors, political action committees, and special interests. This creates a perception that politicians are “bought” or influenced by money rather than serving ordinary citizens. Corruption scandals—such as bribery, lobbying abuses, and misuse of campaign funds—reinforce this view.

Second, there is a long history of dishonesty and broken promises. Politicians often campaign on lofty ideals but compromise or abandon them once in office. This gap between words and actions makes many Americans feel politics is inherently deceptive.

Third, partisanship and mudslinging contribute to the sleazy image. Negative campaigning—attacking an opponent’s character instead of debating issues—has been part of American politics since the 1800s, but in the television and social media age, it has intensified. Constant exposure to attack ads, scandals, and sensationalized news gives the impression that politics is dirty work.

Fourth, media coverage itself shapes the perception. News tends to highlight scandals, conflicts, and personal failings rather than policy discussions. Stories about corruption or misconduct draw more attention than stories about effective governance, so the public often sees the worst side of politics.

Finally, the structure of the system encourages cynicism. The revolving door between government and lobbying firms, gerrymandering, and backroom deals in Congress all give the impression that politics is more about self-interest and power than serving the public good.
