How to Make a Skater Skirt Without a Pattern or Zipper | Easy Sewing Projects for Beginners

Learn how to make a skater skirt without a zipper, pattern, or elastic in today’s step by step sewing tutorial! This is an easy sewing project for beginners or anyone looking for a quick sew. I’ll show you how to cut and sew a half circle skirt from scratch (which is a great alternative to a full circle skirt to get a slimmer fit). We use stretch knit fabric so it’s easy to get a great fit, and I include lots of tips on how to sew stretch fabric too. You’ll just need fabric and a few basic sewing supplies because we’ll be sewing without a pattern, so let’s get to it!

FABRIC RECOMMENDATIONS:


If you’re new to sewing stretch fabric, I’d HIGHLY recommend Liverpool knit or bullet Liverpool Knit. It’s a medium weight fabric that has a little texture to it, and I find it so easy to sew! I’ve never had the seams/hems become wavy with this type of fabric – something about having the medium weight and the little bit of texture to it (it’s not super smooth like the swim fabric I used in the tutorial) makes it easy to sew, so I’d definitely recommend it for beginners!

It’s taken some practice to get the hang of using it and I don’t need it for most of the knit fabric I use (usually a regular presserfoot works fine for me), but I do like having it for the once in a while I use a knit that gets wavy seams/hems. Now that I’ve learned it better (I do suggest practicing before using it on your actual garment) it’s great when I get a tricky fabric because it has helped seams/hems sew smoother.
