Talk Title: Levering educational change: A mathematics professional development project and its impact

Abstract: Levering educational change in contexts of poverty and inequality is a difficult and
inevitably incremental. I will describe the Wits Maths Connect Secondary Project - a ten-year research linked professional development project 2010–2019 aimed at levering change. I will begin with the problem the project set out to address and the theory of change adopted; and then describe the rationale. I will illustrate processes and practices of the major intervention – a mathematics-for-teaching course for lower secondary teachers in schools serving low-income communities in the most populous province in South Africa. In the latter half of the presentation I turn to the research done. First is what we called the learning gains study that investigated the impact of the course on teachers’ knowledge and student learning. Second will be some qualitative studies accumulating into a rich story of levering educational change in mathematics teaching and learning.
