When you are building a fishing rod, one of the first things to do is to find the spine of the blank. I will state that there a multiple thoughts on finding the spine. Some rod builders say there is no need. Others always find the spine. Then once you find the spine, which side of the curve do you place the guides. I typically place my spinning guides so the the natural spine/curve is towards the water and the guides are on the water side. Another thought is to have the arch towards the sky and place spinning guides, for lack of a picture, on the outside of the curve. The thought here is that this placement will make a stiffer rod because you are bending the rod against the natural curve. Somehow I don't think my description makes a clear picture but oh well.
