CSM Giancarlo Macri Air Defense Artillery NCO Induction Speech

The tradition of commemorating a Soldier's transition to a noncommissioned officer (NCO) is said to trace back to the army of Frederick the Great, the Prussian king and military leader. Before being fully recognized as an NCO, a Soldier was required to stand four watches, one every four days. During the first three watches, the Soldier would present gifts to fellow Soldiers, NCOs, and the first sergeant. It was during the fourth watch that the Soldier figuratively crossed the time-honored line and officially joined the NCO corps.

Today, the ceremony commemorates the ranks of the professional NCO Corps and fosters a shared sense of pride among its members. It also serves to honor the legacy of the men and women of the NCO Corps who have served with pride and distinction.
