The importance of contrast

Contrast is vital for making strong art works. That can mean colour contrast, tonal contrast, compositional contrasts … basically, any time you can bring variety into your work, it gets stronger. I am working in sketchbooks at the moment, exploring lots of ideas and one of the most important is how can I use contrast to strengthen each spread. And even though I am working abstractly, this also applies to realistic painting. Contrast will always improve your work.
