He's best known for hosting several late-night talk shows.

Since 2010 he has hosted Conan on the cable channel TBS.

He served as president of The Harvard Lampoon while attending Harvard University.

2. Get in the arena
After writing for several comedy shows in Los Angeles, he joined the writing staff of Saturday Night Live.

3. Earn success
He was a writer and producer for The Simpsons until he was commissioned by NBC to take over Letterman's position as host of Late Night.

4. Find the thing you're good at
A virtual unknown to the public, O'Brien's initial Late Night tenure received unfavorable reviews.

5. Compete with yourself
The show generally improved over time and was highly regarded by the time of his departure in 2009.

6. Improvise
On Late Night, he became known for his active and spontaneous hosting style, which has been characterized as "awkward, self-deprecating humor".

7. Expect difficulties
He has hosted Conan since 2010 and has also hosted such events as the Emmy Awards and Christmas in Washington.

8. Just be you
He has been the subject of a documentary, Conan O'Brien Can't Stop, and has also hosted a 32-city live comedy tour.

9. Have a great work ethic
With the retirement of David Letterman, he became the longest-working of all current late-night talk show hosts in the US, at 22 years.

10. Entertain
Conan acquired the nickname "Coco" after its use in the first "Twitter Tracker" sketch during the second episode of his Tonight Show run.
