It all started off quite well. The big transport planes delivered all the cars and equipment to Canada, the airlines delivered all the personnel safely and by 8 am on Friday morning the nine drivers who had to battle for the four places available in official practice and qualifying were ready to go.

Roberto Moreno sailed through pre-qualifying and was fastest by over three tenths of a second in the EuroBrun which had been damaged during practice at Imola. Olivier Grouillard was second fastest in the sole Osella, bouncing Gabriele Tarquini from the top four on the last lap.

Right at the start of the session Aguri Suzuki in the Lola-Lamborghini came back to the pits with a serious engine problem and he had to switch to his spare chassis, in which he set the third-fastest time just before the end of the session when the track was at its best. For the first time this season, Suzuki was faster than his teammate Eric Bernard who made the cut in fourth.

Once again, neither AGS made the cut, Gabriele Tarquini missing the top four by 0.01 second with Yannick Dalmas another half-second off the pace. It was the fourth double failure to pre-qualify for the French team. The other three entrants were a long way behind.

Bertrand Gachot was seventh in the Coloni, nearly 16 seconds slower than Moreno. Gachot described the handling of his Coloni-Subaru as “a disaster”. It almost was literally, for on his first lap the car swapped ends over the bump into the flat-in fifth kink. Fortunately the car came to a stop without hitting anything – which wasn’t the case a couple of laps later at the tight left-hand corner after the pits. The car went sideways through the fast kink before the braking area and Gachot ended up in the tires on the outside of the corner, the Coloni’s front suspension bent.

Claudio Langes, nearly 19 seconds slower than his team-mate Moreno, apparently did not come up with the necessary backing to keep a permanent seat in the EuroBrun team. Rather than risk the large fine imposed by FISA for not attending the race, the team gave him a couple of laps and then parked the car in the garage!

Slowest again, and nearly 22 seconds off the pace, Bruno Giacomelli managed seven laps with the Life before it was packed away for the weekend, finishing the session on the end of a tow rope after the usual engine problems.
