During a recent dive off the coast of St. Vincent, I had the pleasure of encountering and filming a Caribbean reef squid (Sepioteuthis sepioidea). These fascinating cephalopods are well-known for their mesmerizing color displays and streamlined, torpedo-shaped bodies.

Caribbean reef squid are common in the tropical waters of the Caribbean and western Atlantic. They thrive in coral reefs, seagrass beds, and mangroves, where their dynamic skin coloration helps them blend into their surroundings or communicate with their shoal.

Highly intelligent, these squid are social animals, often seen in small groups. They’re ambush predators, hunting small fish and crustaceans with precision. When threatened, they rely on a burst of ink and dazzling color changes to evade predators.

Filming one in its natural habitat is an incredible experience, as their curiosity often brings them close to divers. Observing their complex behaviors and shimmering hues up close is a true highlight for any underwater photographer or cinematographer.
