Keynes should be the first name one recalls when we talk about today’s capitalism and financial system, and yet, there are so many people who do not even know him. He defines his target audience for his most famous work “The General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money” as not the general public but economists, however what this book contains has been concerning everyone since the last century. His fundamental solution to unemployment is to reduce real wages in order to allow capital employing more people for the same amount of cost. One aspect of this policy suggestion may be to let big corporations stay competitive in a world of conflicts among nation states and imperial endeavors. His way of doing this is to trick people by inflationary policies and he doesn’t even hide it in his book - he argues that wage earners do not react to inflation the same way they react to a decrease in money wages. This tendency or lack of tendency of people, whether psychological or caused by a lack of knowledge in finance, is the core driving force in his monetary policy suggestions. From centralist policies to the appreciation of gold digging, far from liberal ideas and closer to its ancient opposition mercantilism, how come did our contemporary economies embrace such policies? Let’s discuss what these policies caused and how they are related to the political circumstances of our world today. Keynesian system is what I call war economy in peace time, and surely a war economy at times of war as well, hence, a permanent war economy.
