✅ Dragonfly Life Cycle
The dragonfly undergoes incomplete metamorphosis, meaning it passes through three stages:
**🥚 Egg: Female dragonflies lay their eggs in, on, or near water (streams, ponds, lakes). Some species insert eggs into plant tissue underwater, while others drop them onto the water surface. Eggs typically hatch within a few weeks, though some species may delay until the following spring.
🐛 Larva (or Nymph/Naiad): This is the longest stage of the dragonfly's life, often lasting from one to three years, but can range from a few months to over five years, depending on the species and environment.
The larva is entirely aquatic and is a voracious predator, feeding on aquatic insects, worms, tadpoles, and even small fish.
As it grows, the larva molts its exoskeleton numerous times (up to 14 times).
Before the final molt, the larva moves to the edge of the water and begins to breathe air.
🦋 Adult: The final larval stage crawls out of the water, typically onto a vertical surface like a plant stem or rock. The larval skin splits, and the adult dragonfly emerges.
Initially, the newly emerged adult (called a teneral) is soft, pale, and weak in flight.
It spends a period, often a week, away from the water to allow its body and wings to harden, and to develop its final adult coloration and sexual maturity.
The adult is also a fierce aerial predator of flying insects.
The adult stage is the shortest part of the life cycle, usually lasting only a few weeks to a few months, during which time they mate and the female returns to the water to lay eggs, beginning the cycle anew.
