Paris, France: Jean-Marie Le Pen, the controversial founder of France’s far-right National Front party (now National Rally), has died at the age of 96. Le Pen, who spent decades at the forefront of France’s far-right politics, was a divisive figure known for his vehement criticism of immigration, globalisation, and his controversial statements, including minimizing the Holocaust. Le Pen’s death was confirmed by his daughter, Marine Le Pen, the current leader of National Rally, who expressed her sorrow over the passing of the man who shaped the party and its platform. Throughout his career, Le Pen was a polarizing figure, fighting in colonial wars, founding the National Front in 1972, and contesting five presidential elections, though he never succeeded in becoming president. His statements about the Nazi occupation and the Holocaust, particularly calling the Nazi gas chambers “merely a detail,” were widely condemned and led to multiple convictions for inciting racial hatred. Despite his controversial rhetoric, Le Pen’s far-right populism resonated with many French voters, tapping into frustrations over immigration and job security. Le Pen's political career set the stage for the rise of far-right populism in France and beyond. In 2002, he reached a presidential run-off but lost to Jacques Chirac in a landslide. His influence continued to be felt, especially in shaping the French far-right movement that his daughter, Marine Le Pen, would later lead. Le Pen was also a fierce critic of the European Union and its perceived erosion of national sovereignty. French President Emmanuel Macron remarked on Le Pen’s death, acknowledging his role in shaping French politics over nearly 70 years, though he described him as a "historic figure of the far right," whose legacy would be judged by history. Marine Le Pen learned of her father's death during a layover in Kenya as she returned from the French overseas territory of Mayotte.
