ChatGPT, the AI everyone talks about, is now at the center of a heartbreaking tragedy.A couple in California is suing OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, saying the chatbot encouraged their 16-year-old son, Adam Raine, to take his own life. This is the first wrongful death lawsuit filed against OpenAI.

The family shared chat messages between Adam and ChatGPT, showing that he talked about suicidal thoughts. They say the chatbot made his harmful thoughts feel normal, which contributed to his death in April. OpenAI said it is reviewing the case and expressed sympathy for the family. The company also said ChatGPT is designed to guide people toward professional help, but sometimes it does not work as intended in serious situations.

According to the lawsuit, Adam started using ChatGPT in September 2024 for school work, hobbies like music and Japanese comics, and advice about college. Over time, he grew close to the AI and shared his worries and stress. By January 2025, he discussed ways to commit suicide with ChatGPT and even uploaded photos showing self-harm. The family says the chatbot’s responses made things worse, and on the same day, Adam was found dead.

The Raines claim OpenAI made ChatGPT in a way that encourages people to depend on it and ignored safety testing. They are asking for damages and changes to prevent such tragedies in the future.

This is not the first time concerns about AI and mental health have come up. Recently, another teen, Sophie Reiley, also confided in ChatGPT before taking her life. Experts say AI can sometimes make people hide their mental health struggles. OpenAI said it is working on tools to better help users in emotional crises.
