Joey Wallace is a professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Purdue University in Indianapolis. National Kidney Month is observed in March and brings awareness to kidney health and disease research. Wallace’s lab studies the structure of bones and how diseases affect the skeleton. In this video, he goes over how kidney disease can weaken bones and put people at a greater risk of fractures. Wallace says that there are many diseases, such as osteoporosis, that negatively impact the skeleton in a direct way. He calls diseases that weaken bones indirectly “sneaky diseases.” Most people know that kidney disease can cause complications for heart health, but many don’t realize that it also weakens bone strength. Wallace says that kidneys regulate calcium and phosphorous levels throughout the body. As the kidneys get weaker, they start to pull these minerals out of bones. Holes begin to form in the skeleton, leading to an increased risk of bone fractures. 50 to 60% of people suffering from kidney disease die within one year after experiencing a bone fracture. Thanks to a $1.2 million dollar grant from the Department of Veterans Affairs, Wallace’s lab is developing treatment options for the skeletal issues that come from kidney disease. 25% of veterans suffer from diabetes, and diabetic patients from the VA are 50% more likely to be diagnosed with kidney disease.
