Astronomy on Tap is a global phenomenon where professional scientists give informal science talks in local bars with accompanying pub trivia and interactions with the public. The Los Angeles chapter of Astronomy on Tap is very active, with monthly events at the Dog Haus Biergarten in Pasadena. Lisa Drummond is a Burke Institute postdoctoral fellow at Caltech. She completed her PhD at MIT in 2024. During her PhD, she used perturbation theory to study black hole binary systems with extreme mass ratios and the gravitational waves they produce; gravitational waves from these systems will be detectable by future space-based gravitational wave detector LISA. In particular, she focused on modelling the contribution of the smaller black hole’s spin to the gravitational wave signal. https://lisavdrummond.com/
