External Affairs Minister Dr S. Jaishankar was in Dhaka to represent India and extend condolences following the demise of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia. During his visit, Jaishankar briefly encountered Pakistan National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq on the sidelines of the funeral proceedings.
The brief exchange, described by government sources as a courtesy handshake and exchange of greetings, marked the first such high-level contact between representatives of India and Pakistan since Operation Sindoor. Bangladesh’s interim government chief, Muhammad Yunus, shared photographs of the moment, noting that the two leaders exchanged greetings in Dhaka ahead of the funeral.
Government sources have clarified that the interaction was limited strictly to a courtesy handshake and short pleasantries, and did not constitute any bilateral meeting or diplomatic engagement and that there has been no change in India’s stance towards Pakistan, reiterating that New Delhi maintains a clear and consistent position of no talks or discussions with what it terms a terror-supporting state.
