I’m building a Chocolate 3D Printer for my MSc at the University of Sussex. This time with a new extruder design featuring a 200ml syringe. The extruder motor turns a lead screw which pulls down a plate that depresses the syringe plunger.
I’ve made only simple changes to the printer settings for this test. I just need to see if it will squeeze out chocolate. And it does!
The syringe has no heating element or insulation so the chocolate is pre-melted and spooned inside. The chocolate cools inside the syringe, but there was about 30 minutes working time for printing before the chocolate became too thick for the motor to extrude. I could still squeeze it out by hand, but the motor would not manage it.
I would like to try the syringe with a narrower nozzle and see how that behaves compared to the wide nozzle used today.
I can change the speed of the extruder motor to control the plunger better than today’s test dialling in the settings to find the sweet spot.
