A Superman comic from 1938 has fetched $175,000 at auction. It could have got $3 million but the back had been ripped. A 1939 Superman comic discovered among newspapers during a home renovation in Minnesota has just fetched $175,000 at auction.

Afficionados will already be able to guess that this is a pretty special copy.

The Action Comics No.1 shows the first appearance of the all-American superhero by writer Jerry Siegel and illustrator Joe Shuster.

The thing is, auctioneers reckon it could have been sold for up to $3 million. It didn't because the back had been accidentally ripped shortly after it was found.

There are only around 110 remaining copies of the 250,000 originals left in circulation. Report by Ashley Fudge.
