🔑 Show Notes: [Bilingual Butterfly] @bilingualbutterfly2883 suggestion. Welcome to the Scout Troop! As a new Assistant Scoutmaster, you have important responsibilities. As a “scout-facing” leader you must work with the Scoutmaster in getting a patrol assignment in a larger troop or as an alternate Scoutmaster in training in a smaller troop. No matter your experience level in scouting try not to get overwhelmed. We only promised to do our best.
Here are ten essential tips to help you get started.
• First, know the Scout Oath and Law. These are the foundation of Scouting and serve as a guide for both youth and adult leaders.
• Second, attend training courses. You will learn essential skills and techniques to help you become a better Scout leader.
Online – create your my.scouting.org account and take YPT. Start taking the ScoutingU courses.
Classroom – many Councils and Districts will offer live training throughout the year. Make sure you attend scouting university and get ready for Wood Badge training.
Ongoing – Councils and Districts have ongoing monthly gatherings known as Roundtable or Pow-Wow. Make sure that you attend as often as you can.
• Third, get to know the Scouts. This includes their interests, hobbies, strengths, and weaknesses. Understanding them will help you guide them better.
• Fourth, be a team player. Work closely with the Scoutmaster, other leaders, and parents to support the Troop's goals and vision.
• Fifth, always try to “be prepared”. Whether it's planning a camping trip or leading a meeting, make sure you have the necessary tools and knowledge.
• Sixth, communicate effectively. Listen to the Scouts and provide clear, concise, and positive direction.
• Seventh, lead by example. Demonstrate the values of Scouting through your actions and behavior.
• Eighth, encourage youth leadership. Help Scouts develop leadership skills by giving them opportunities to lead and make decisions.
• Ninth, promote safety. Prioritize the safety of all members during Troop activities and follow established safety guidelines. Download a copy of the guide to safe scouting and read it.
• Tenth, have fun! Scouting is a rewarding experience, and you will make lasting memories and friendships.
