In this video, I explain how the early Romans chose their kings during the Roman Kingdom period (c. 753–509 BCE). Unlike modern hereditary monarchies, the Roman system combined popular participation, aristocratic influence, and religious approval.

The process involved three key institutions:

the Senate, composed of Rome’s leading elders,

the Comitia Curiata (popular assembly), and

the role of auspices, through which divine approval was sought.

After the death of a king, an interrex was appointed from among the senators to manage the transition. The interrex nominated a candidate, the Senate approved the nomination, and the people formally elected the king. Finally, religious rituals confirmed the king’s legitimacy.

This video clarifies common misconceptions about absolute monarchy in early Rome and shows how shared authority and constitutional customs shaped Roman political thought. These early practices later influenced the development of the Roman Republic and Western constitutional traditions.
