We're proud to have organized in December 12th, the first debate of its kind in the European Parliament in Brussels.

As unbelievable as it sounds, the independence of the #judiciary is seriously threatened in the EU's 5th largest economy, #Poland. The country's governing Law and Justice (#PiS) party has subjugated the Constitutional Tribunal and National Council of the Judiciary. It's slowly also taking over the Supreme Court, waiting for their chance to replace its president. The judiciary and state prosecution are becoming politicized, yet just another tool in the hands of Justice Minister Zbigniew Ziobro. But in this grim reality not a day passes by when a large group of judges and prosecutors refuses to give up and relinquish their independence to the executive.

Their associations, "Iustitia Polska", "Themis" and "Lex Super Omnia", have risen to the challenge, guarding the #RuleOfLaw against PiS's authoritarian attempts. We've invited the most famous of those "disobedient" judges and prosecutors to tell us about the persecution campaign against them, from the systemic down to a very personal level.

Our European Parliament lunch debate, co-organized with Renew Europe, was hosted by some of Poland's best friends in the EP, Sophie in 't Veld MEP (RE, Netherlands) & Michal Šimečka MEP (RE, Slovakia), featuring crucial input from the uncompromising Róża Thun MEP (EPP, Poland) & our own Lyudmyla Kozlovska. The room was packed to the point that infamous state TV correspondent Cezary Gmyz, sent by the Party for that reason from Berlin, had to stand in the door... ;)
