STORYLINE
Hundreds of Jewish worshippers gathered at the holy site of the Western Wall on Sunday for a mass prayer in support of Israelis living in the south of the country, which has borne the brunt of rocket attacks from the Gaza Strip.
One rocket damaged a home in the southern city of Ashkelon on Sunday, punching a hole in the ceiling.
Eight Israelis were wounded by shrapnel Sunday, one of them moderately.
Three Israelis were killed earlier in the week by rocket fire.
Recent rocket fire on Tel Aviv and Friday's attack towards Jerusalem have significantly escalated the hostilities by widening the militants' rocket range and putting 3.5 (m) million Israelis, or half the country's population, within reach.
Israel has retaliated with a barrage of airstrikes, killing 57 Palestinians, including 24 civilians. More than 400 civilians have been wounded, medics say.
The Western Wall is revered by Jews as a remnant of their biblical Temple, and many people of all faiths come to the wall to pray and slip notes with requests between the ancient stones.
