After 15 years, three generations and more than 1.7 million sales across nearly 100 countries, Renault’s rugged little Duster has finally touched down in Australia.

Better late than never?

Designed to be tough, practical and affordable, the 2025 model launches locally in Evolution and Techno flavours, each available in either a 1.3-litre turbo-petrol front-wheel-drive auto (113kW/250Nm) or a 1.2-litre mild-hybrid three-cylinder manual all-wheel-drive (96kW/230Nm).

Prices start from just $31,990 plus on-roads, with even the most expensive Techno 4x4 coming in under $38K before costs.

The Duster’s strengths are clear – an impressive 212mm ground clearance, up to 1564 litres of cargo space, a 30,000km service interval and genuine off-road ability in the AWD – and the FWD!

But it’s not without compromise: the manual-only 4x4 lacks outright grunt, interior quality is modest, and key safety features like adaptive cruise aren’t available.

Most notably, there’s no ANCAP crash test result yet and its Euro NCAP twin only scored three stars in 2024, which could give some buyers pause. With the Suzuki Jimny XL firmly in its sights, the Duster offers a unique value proposition for budget-conscious adventurers – but the choice between drivetrain and spec is far from straightforward.
