Who needs to apply for an ESTA?
Citizens of certain countries fall under a category known as the 'visa waiver program' when traveling to the United States, meaning that if you are a citizen of one of these countries you do not need a visa to enter the country as a visitor.
However, certain people from these countries may in fact need a visa depending on personal circumstances, such as if they have a criminal record or have been refused entry to the U.S. before. In order to determine if you may enter the United States without a visa you must submit an ESTA application. If you are approved, it means that you fit the qualifications to travel to the U.S. under the visa waiver program, and will not need to obtain a visa before traveling to the U.S.

How do I apply for an ESTA?
In order to apply for an ESTA you must visit the US Customs and Border Control website and fill out a form online. You will enter certain information, such as your name, date of birth, passport details and citizenship into the online form. After submitting all of your information, and paying the appropriate fee, you will receive one of three responses:
Authorization Approved: This means that you are approved for an ESTA, and you may travel to the United States without a visa.
Authorization Pending: This means that a decision on your application could not be made automatically and you must log-in to your application within 72 hours for a response.
Travel Not Authorized: This means that you are not approved for an ESTA and you must apply for a visa to enter the United States at your nearest U.S. embassy or consulate.

How do I travel to the U.S. with my ESTA?
If your application results in the 'Travel Authorized' decision, you will be given an application number and expiration date. The expiration date will be 2 years from the date you applied or the date your passport expires, whichever comes first.

You may print out your application number and expiration date for your records, but it is not necessary to bring the information to the United States with you. However, you must travel using the passport you applied for the ESTA with. Upon your arrival to the United States a customs officer will scan your passport and be able to view the information you provided on your ESTA application.

Remember that an ESTA application is only applicable for those who wish to travel to the U.S. as a visitor. If you are from a country not included under the visa waiver program, or want to go to the United States to work or live, you must apply for a visa. Furthermore, even people who have an ESTA approval may be denied entry at the border; the ultimate decision is up to the customs officer.
