This captivating theater is home to the world's largest air-insulated Van de Graaff generator, capable of producing massive indoor lightning bolts. These spectacular displays are used to explore topics such as lightning, conductors, insulators, storm safety, and electromagnetic force. The Theater of Electricity also features Tesla coils that generate approximately half a million volts. Invented by Nikola Tesla in 1891 to study high-voltage, high-frequency alternating current electricity, Tesla coils have no moving parts. Instead, they rely on moving charges and changing magnetic forces, allowing educators to create impressive high-voltage demonstrations.

The two ball-topped columns in the Theater of Electricity house the world’s largest air-insulated Van de Graaff generator. This generator routinely produces charges of a million volts, which are discharged as bolts of lightning. Originally constructed in 1932 as an atom smasher by Dr. Robert Van de Graaff, it now delivers a powerful display under the guidance of our dedicated educators.
