This video describes the difference between 3-in-1 and 2-in-1 parenteral nutrition.

These are sometimes called a total nutrient admixture (TNA) and dextrose-amino acid formulation, respectively.

You will see both kinds of parenteral nutrition defined, and then you will learn about some of the major differences, some of which can be perceived as advantages and disadvantages of each.

In short, a 3-in-1 contains all of the essential nutrients in 1 bag – dextrose, amino acids, lipids, vitamins, minerals, and water, if needed.

A 2-in-1 contains all of the essential nutrients except for lipids.

When a 2-in-1 formulation is provided, an intravenous fat emulsion can be infused separately as a secondary infusion.

This is commonly referred to as a “piggyback” infusion.
