Thousands of Black Women file Lawsuits claiming Hair Relaxers gave them Cancer; Black Lawmakers Reintroduce The CROWN Act to Ban Hair Discrimination - TheAHNShow with Historian & National Political Commentator Michael Imhotep 6-2-24
Thousands of African American Women have filed Lawsuits against hair relaxer companies after the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) study found an association, though not a causal link, between frequent use of chemical hair relaxers and uterine cancer. Hair straighteners such as L’Oreal’s Dark & Lovely and Revlon’s Creme of Nature are marketed overwhelmingly to women of color, according to the lawsuits.
Some of the ads show Black women applying hair products before cutting to a summary of the NIH study’s findings.
More than 7,000 similar lawsuits have been filed by many plaintiffs’ lawyers. The cases have been consolidated in a Chicago federal court as part of a multidistrict litigation proceeding (MDL), a procedure designed to more efficiently manage lawsuits filed in multiple jurisdictions.
Even though the legal claims asserted in the lawsuits don’t allege racial discrimination, Attorney Benjamin Crump says the cases should be viewed as “essentially civil rights issues.”
For Black women, “it’s projected on them that they have to live up to some kind of European standard of beauty,” Crump, who represents plaintiffs in high-profile racial discrimination cases and is a regular on cable news, said in an interview.

We can’t start studying our history in SLAVERY. Even when we study the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade, which is important to study, we can’t start in 1619 or in the 1440s when the Portuguese get involved. We have to understand the history chronologically and deal with the 800 year occupation of Europe by the Africans known as the Moors who enter into the Iberian Peninsula, today known as Spain and Portugal, from North Africa in 711A.D. This course not only deals with the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade but thousands of years of history that leads up to the Slave Trade of African people taking place.
This Online Course was created by Historian, Michael Imhotep founder of The African History Network and consists of over 200 slides, 80 - 100 articles, 15 books as reference (you don't need to purchase any of these books) video clips and interviews Historian Michael Imhotep has done with various Historians and Scholars like Prof. James Small, Prof. Kaba Kamene, Anthony Browder, Runoko Rashidi and more. You will be able to ask question during the LIVE Class Sessions with the text chat option.
