Jack and Janice Buckelew have turned their garage into an inventory of life-saving medical supplies for their son.

“We do work really hard to keep at least two months ahead on the supplies,” Jack Buckelew said. “We created an ICU, honestly.”

In October 2015, their son Jonathan became dizzy and disoriented during a chiropractic visit. He was eventually rushed by EMS to North Fulton Hospital Emergency Room.

According to a Fulton County state court jury verdict, two doctors failed to properly diagnose that Jonathan was having a stroke, one that went untreated for hours.

The chiropractic, the hospital, and its other clinical staff were not found liable in the case. However, a court found the ER doctor and radiologist “grossly negligent” after evidence showed the ER doctor did not mention to the consulting neurologist that Jonathan had seen a chiropractor earlier, that he experienced a second seizure-like event, and also that the radiologist missed information on a scan.

As a result, Jonathan, now 34, has lived in a chair, immobile, for a decade. He has Locked-in Syndrome, a rare neurological disorder where a person is conscious and aware but unable to move or speak due to complete paralysis of nearly all voluntary muscles, except the eyes.

Jonathan relies on his family and team of nurses to care for him around the clock. He cannot talk, but he can communicate by blinking or using his nose to type on a keypad.
