Rod Weaver, Author of the book on bowling history, "More Than Just a Game", relates recent news from the Duckpin game.
DIX HITS DUCKPIN TOURS' "DAILY DOUBLE"
Much like the PBA's Jesper Svensson's hot streak in winning back-to-back tourneys on the TENPIN side of bowling's professional ranks, one of Baltimore's Best on the Duckpin Front, Phil Dix of Essex, MD, cashed in big for the month of May. On May 18th, Dix won the Pop Whitten Pro Tour by the slimmest of margins at Greenmount Bowl in Hampstead, Maryland for a cool $1,500 1st place check, edging Robert J Hodges for the title. Then, a week later in the Duckpin Professional Bowlers Association tour stop at Southside Bowl in Hagerstown, Maryland, Phil donned the champion's crown along with claiming its corresponding $5,000 payoff by defeating Canadian star, Mitch Pape.
in the pop whitten pro tour, dix was the high qualifier in a field of 159 entrants at the close of the preliminary round, pitching a stout 6-game block score of 986 (an average of 164 per game). Phil rolled games of 179 126 171 155 163 192.
Dix solidly advanced from the sunday head to head divisional round into the bracket elimination finals of 16 competitors.
In his 3 games on the way to the championship match, Dix ousted Andrew Gaver, 145-142, then evan stevens, 151-110, and closed the semi-finals with a 150-138 victory over Jon Green.
Hodges, known as RJ in bowling circles, completed his ascent to the final game with wins over Andy Huffman, 174-147, Colby Deantoniis, 146-123, and John Ports of the Pins Over Average contingent, 166-106. RJ rolled the only "200" game in the preliminary round, in his 6-game block of 112 214 114 138 166 154.
In a gritty battle for the championship, Dix nipped Hodges by a mere pin at the game's climax, 136-135.
Next up for Dix, this time on Memorial Day weekend, was the Duckpin Professional Bowlers Association. The annual Hagerstown event usually carries a higher payoff amount than the average duckpin tour, as it was one of the preferred tourneys of the late hall of fame Hagerstown bowling proprietor, Frank Turner.
Dix qualified comfortably at #10 of the 24 finalists with an 8-game score of 1166. Phil's eventual champion's round opponent, Pape, qualified 15th with a score of 1141. Both men would ultimately weather some tense moments in the head-to-head contests, with steady and sound scoring to advance to the next and most critical phase of the tournament.
In the bracket round, after the head-to-head competition, 8 bowlers comprised the deciding quarter-finals 'playoffs'.
On Dix's side of the draw, Phil's first 2 matches saw him defeat Zander Beddow and Andrew Buckingham, while Pape, in the other half, disposed of Kyle Shaw and Brian Vest. In the final contest of the tournament, Dix continued his flow of steady rolling, saving his best bracket game for last, with a superior 154-125 victory against Pape.
