How does a soldier of the early 1600's prepare themselves for melee combat? Three styles are shown here.
Galen has a rapier and buckler (this is where we get the term "Swashbuckler"). The buckler is small and lightweight, and the rapier has a long reach. This is a good combination for someone who likes to be swift and nimble.
Rob, on the other hand, is armed as a targeteer. He's got a round shield called a target and a wide sword sometimes referred to as a hanger or broadsword. This weapon is great for cutting and slashing through the air with momentum. The target covers more of the body, and can also be used to punch and tackle opponents.
Chas has a rapier, similar to Galen, but also a dagger in his off-hand. The dagger can be used to parry a sword as long as you're accurate enough to catch the blade with your off-hand. The main advantage to the dagger is that it allows you to strike a swift deadly blow with either hand. The disadvantage is that it's much smaller in surface area, and therefore less useful against very fast or very hard strikes.
