Situated along the Line of Control (Loc), the Uri Sector in Baramulla, Kashmir has witnessed countless historical events and remains a significant military outpost. But there's more to Uri than its strategic importance. It is the place that has redefined the India-Pakistan relationship on a defence level.

On the morning of September 18, 2016, the Uri sector in Kashmir witnessed one of the deadliest terrorist attacks on the Indian Army in recent history. The attack targeted an Army brigade headquarters near the town of Uri, situated close to the Line of Control (LoC) between India and Pakistan.

In response to the Uri attack, the Indian Army conducted surgical strikes on September 28-29, 2016, targeting terrorist launch pads across the LoC in Pakistan-administered Kashmir.

As a result, the Kaman Aman Setu Friendship Bridge was closed indefinitely which was used for divided families of India and POK to meet each other; and for LoC trade.

PERMITS
As of June 2023, there are no restrictions on Indian citizens visiting Uri Town, including the Uri Bazaar, without a permit. However, visitors from outside the Uri sub-division or other districts may need a No Objection Certificate (NOC) or permission from the SDM. Visitors should also keep their identity cards with the office at the Transit Check Point (TCP).
