In this video of Living the Jo life, we explore the capital city of Indonesia, Jakarta, where we investigate the causes of why Jakarta is sinking at an alarming rate of up to 25 cm per year. In fact, Jakarta is the world’s fastest sinking city with more than 40% of north Jakarta currently located below sea level. As north Jakarta has the highest rates of land subsidence and is the area most at risk of flooding, we visit the Muara Baru area in the northern suburbs, where we inspect the seawall that is currently the only defense against flooding and storm surges for the residents in this area. We also visit an informal settlement built on stilts along the water. Here, we talk with many of the local residents to get their perspective on the land subsidence issue in this area. We also inspect some government housing set up to protect residents in Muara Baru. From a nearby harbor, we go on a small boat to get a view of the concrete seawall, constructed to protect the local areas against flooding. We also jump onboard one of the classic fishing boats. Next, we have a look at one of the 75,000 ground water pumps and wells, which are the root cause of the rapid sinking of Jakarta. We also explore some of the canals around Old Batavia Square (Taman Fatahillah). We finish off at the National Monument, where we reflect on the government’s decision to relocate their capital to the Island of Borneo.
