Supplied new in May 1963 by Brooklands of Bond Street, to W M Robb Ltd of West Drayton, this rare DB4 Series 5 Vantage was ordered and delivered with the optional high performance, DB4 GT engine. Originally developed for the DB4 GT competition engineered model, the GT engine is equipped with 3 x Webber 45 DCOE carburettors and a competition derived 12 plug cylinder head, running on twin ignition. Of the Series 5 Vantage models built, only 6 were fitted with this option, of which this example is one.
Identified by the enclosed headlamp design of the DB4 GT’s, the DB4 Series 5 Vantage GT was built for only 1 year, prior to the similarly proportioned DB5 entering production. The combination of Aston Martin’s most powerful production engine in the lighter DB4 Vantage chassis, remains a potent combination of performance and exclusivity.
Subjected to a major and fully documented restoration, carried out in the late 1980’s, which included many upgrades with mild competition in mind. Subsequently, this exceptionally rare car has had 4 long term owners, in Europe and the USA, before being re-imported to the UK in 2010. Subsequently, further restorative works have been completed, by marque specialists. Issued with FIA GTP papers in 1993, the technical specification remains unchanged.
Further substantial refurbishment and improvements were carried out by ourselves during 2015 and 16, included attention to the engine, transmission, suspension, brakes and steering, all electrics inspected and fitting of an auxiliary cooling fan. Concurrently the interior was fully retrimmed in new Connolly Vaumol Suede Green hides, with matching Wilton carpets and fully insulated to reduce heat and noise.
An extensive history file accompanies the car, including details of the 1980’s restoration, later extensive maintenance invoices, including a complete engine rebuild and block replacement, now to 4.2 litre capacity and delivering circa 300+ bhp.
Owned previously by the prestigious Blackhawk Collection, the extensive history file contains overseas ownership details, FIA historical identity papers now expired, invoices from its 1980’s and 2012 rebuilds and an extensive pictorial record, of the extensive works carried out by ourselves 5 years ago.
Now sitting on genuine Borrani wire wheels, this exceptionally rare, evocative and highly useable DB4 Series 5 Vantage GT, is outstandingly equipped, a thrilling car to drive and is in excellent condition. A star in any collection of important classic cars, this exceptional DB4 Vantage GT, even rarer than its spiritual big brother the DB4GT, is ideally suited for high-speed tours or road rallies, where it’s performance advantage can be easily demonstrated.
