About the piece:
I Remember is a tonal portrait that explores ideas of a warm, yet sullen nostalgic longing through memories of childhood -- a childhood which the subject of the poem mourns the irreversible loss of -- to the point of often preferring death.
Throughout, there are many instances of very close intervallic harmonies. These moments should be sung with very minimal vibrato so as to not confuse the totality; and to mitigate the conflict between neighboring parts.
The text for the piece was taken from the poem I Remember, I Remember by Thomas Hood.

About the composer:
Austin Schend received his bachelor’s degree in music composition from Pacific Lutheran University in May of 2019. During his time at PLU, he studied composition under the direction of Greg Youtz and the mentorship of Richard Nance. His pieces have been performed internationally and on the radio by a number of ensembles including the Choir of the West and Consonaire Amici. Austin maintains a robust piano teaching career in his hometown of Tacoma, Washington.
