Vietnam War veteran James Roode sat down on November 19, 2025, at his home in Loveland, Colorado, to share his remarkable life story and U.S. Army service. Born in Fairbury, Nebraska, Jim enlisted in the Army and volunteered for the airborne, beginning his career with the 82nd Airborne Division. There, he was assigned to the highly unusual and secretive “Davy Crockett Unit,” a Cold War–era airborne unit trained to parachute into combat carrying a portable nuclear mortar system.
Jim later took part in the U.S. military intervention in the Dominican Republic before transferring to the 101st Airborne Division. He was subsequently deployed to Vietnam, where he was severely wounded during a mortar attack.
Following his military service, Jim built a long and respected career in the construction industry, eventually earning a civil engineering degree at age 59,a testament to his perseverance and lifelong commitment to learning. Jim and his wife Sharon have been married for 63 years and are the proud parents of a son and grandparents to two grandsons.
