Venezuelans are not the only foreign nationals from South America coming to Trinidad as illegal immigrants.

Immigration Officer at the Enforcement Unit, Gewan Harricoo, made the statement during a meeting of a Joint Select Committee of Parliament on the feasibility of widening the availability of non-custodial penalties in the criminal justice system Friday morning.

He said almost 100% of South American detainees at the Immigration Detention Center in Aripo are undocumented.

He said in some cases, these persons also have significant criminal ancestry in their homeland. He added that close to 50% of people on order of supervision do not report and some have been found to have committed crimes while in breach.

Acting Chief Immigration Officer Charmaine Gandhi-Andrews said Currently over 2000 non-nationals are on an order of supervision.

She said if they were to conduct an exercise, they would find at least 500 persons in breach of the Immigration Act.
