Part 2- Cloud Service Models

1. Software as a Service (SaaS):
SaaS delivers software applications over the internet on a subscription basis. Users access the software via web browsers without worrying about infrastructure, platform, or maintenance.
Examples: SAP S/4HANA Cloud, Salesforce, Google Workspace.

2. Platform as a Service (PaaS):
PaaS provides a platform allowing developers to build, deploy, and manage applications without handling the underlying infrastructure. It includes tools for application development, database management, integration, and more.
Examples: SAP Business Technology Platform (SAP BTP), Google App Engine, Microsoft Azure App Service.

3. Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS):
IaaS offers virtualized computing resources like servers, storage, and networking on demand. Users have control over the OS, storage, and deployed applications.
Examples: Amazon Web Services (AWS EC2), Microsoft Azure VMs, Google Compute Engine.

Where SAP BTP Fits in?

SAP Business Technology Platform (SAP BTP) is primarily a Platform as a Service (PaaS) offering. It enables businesses to build, integrate, and extend SAP and non-SAP applications in the cloud. It provides services for:

Application development (CAP, MDK, UI5)

Integration (SAP Integration Suite)

Data management and analytics (SAP HANA Cloud, SAP Data Warehouse Cloud)

Security and identity management (XSUAA)


However, SAP BTP also includes some SaaS elements, such as prebuilt services and tools for business processes, analytics, and AI.
