The Scottish accent can be notoriously hard for other English speakers to understand, but what if that’s because it’s not actually English at all? Though closely related to English, Scots is recognized by the government of Scotland as a separate language with its own rich literary history, and though most Scottish people speak English in daily life these days, dialects of Scots are still spoken particularly in historically isolated regions like the northeast. So I went around the countryside learning and speaking the ancient and increasingly rare dialect known as Doric, heavily influenced by the Vikings and their Old Norse language, and it was unlike anything I’d ever heard.
