King Fahd International Airport - The largest airport in the world

According to World Population Review, King Fahd International in Dammam, Saudi Arabia, is the largest airport by far. As Construction Review Online says, this airport stretches over 299.61 square miles of land, and is located in Dammam City. Manhattan in New York City takes up less than 23 square miles, for comparison.

Despite its impressive size, the airport is not the busiest in the world, or even in Saudia Arabia. Just 9.7 million travelers pass through King Fahd International each year.

Planning for the King Fahd International Airport first started in the year 1976. There was careful consideration taken into account when choosing both the location and design of the airport.

The airport sports two 4-kilometer-long runways interspersed with taxiways. There is also a very large rental parking complex capable of storing 4,930 vehicles, along with three terminals, two of which are the Royal Terminal and Aramco Terminal.

Included within the design is also a mosque that can accommodate 2,000 people, making the airport a place for Islamic worship as well — an important feature for a religious country like Saudi Arabia.
