During the Russian-Ukrainian war, soldiers and engineers have to experiment with the protection of military equipment to adapt it to real combat conditions. Some equipment even looks like post-apocalyptic cars from the Mad Max movies, writes Business Insider .
It is noted that on August 11, a photo was taken of the improvised protection of a Ukrainian Humvee in Kostiantynivka. The vehicle was surrounded by a large metal cage, netting, and sticks sticking out from the top and sides.
The publication explained that such an unusual modernization of military equipment is caused by the need to protect it from attacks by enemy drones, which are the main weapon on the battlefield. The armor is not standardized, which is why soldiers and engineers on both sides of the war often use a "do it yourself" approach.
Often, such upgrades make it virtually impossible to determine what kind of vehicle it is. For example, in July, a Russian tank was spotted at the front, protected by a large cage, a significant amount of netting, and some other materials.
DeepState reported that the 28th Separate Mechanized Brigade fighters destroyed this "monster tank" with the help of about six dozen FPV drones. The problem was that finding a weak spot was not so easy.
The publication recalled that such improvised armored structures began to appear on the battlefield in 2023. That was when drones became a serious problem.
Moreover, the so-called protective cages often vary in appearance and overall effectiveness. At first, it was observed only on tanks and armored combat vehicles, but now it has spread to a whole range of combat systems. The publication emphasized that protective cages can protect equipment from some anti-tank weapons and FPV drones. Even defense companies have paid attention to them, and have begun equipping some of their combat systems with them.
Earlier, military analyst Richard Verecker, citing data from the Warspotting.net resource, reported that against the background of a general decrease in armored vehicle losses, the Russians began to lose T-62 tanks more often . According to the analysis, in the period from March to July 2025, losses of this tank increased by 2.5 times.
According to the analysis, T-62 losses increased 2.5 times between March and July 2025. According to experts, this is due to the fact that these older models are more often used in combat, while Russia is trying to put newer tanks, in particular the T-80, into reserve for preservation. In total, since the beginning of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Russia has lost at least 3,545 tanks. The largest number is the T-72 (1,529 units), followed by the T-80 (1,113), T-62 (274) and T-90 (168). At the same time, June and July 2025 saw the lowest losses of all time: only 19 and 25 tanks, respectively.
