Our series continues as we look at those that were first born to the monarchs of England, yet did not go on to take the crown and the reasons why.
In this episode we look at Henry, Duke of Cornwall, the first born son of Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon. A tenuous person in this series we are aware due to Henry's death as an infant but we felt none the less that the continuity of the series should include him.
Henry, Duke of Cornwall is perhaps one of the shortest first born heirs to the throne of England in history.
Henry was born on the first of January 1511.
The first born surviving child to Henry VIII of England with his first wife, Catherine of Aragon.
Catherine at the time was only 25 years old.
A year earlier Catherine gave birth to a still born daughter, making Henry, her second pregnancy.
Henry VIII, celebrated the birth of his son and male heir with several large celebrations, including a tournament at Westminster Palace.
The young Duke of Cornwall god parents were Louis XII of France, and Margaret of Austria, Duchess of Savoy.
52 days after his birth, Henry, Duke of Cornwall passed away at Richmond Palace in London
There are no recorded causes for his death
But we must remember that health and sanitary conditions, in Tudor times are not what we know today.
Children, would have drunk low percentage alcohol of 1 or 2 percent rather than water, which at that time contained many bacteria that could kill
Also, there we no antibiotics, therefore even the smallest cut could turn infectious, and kill a person
There are no records to say that Henry was unhealthy before his death, so the reason for his passing remains a mystery
Henry was buried at Westminster Abbey on the 27th February 1511
Over the next 7 years, Catherine of Aragon was pregnant another four times, with two stillborn sons and one stillborn daughter
Only one child survived, Mary, who went on to become Queen of England, following the death of her younger brother, Edward VI, and became known as bloody Mary, for her persecution of protestants
In Henry VIII’s eyes, the failure of Catherine to produce a male heir, saw Henry reject Rome’s rule over England, and the formation of the church of England, which the king would be head of
Allowing him to divorce Catherine for his mistress, Anne Boleyn.
